Subtitle Podcast - Did Katrina Kill the New Orleans Accent?

Subject

The Linguistics Society of America funds a podcast called Subtitle. This podcast studies the development of language and the effect of language on the people who speak them. They did an episode on gentrification in New Orleans and how Hurricane Katrina has caused the city accent to change. This is their episode description:

"In 2005, Hurrican Katrina displaced tens of thousands of New Orleanians. Many never returned to the city. Others have since moved in, bringing with them different languages and dialects. Some locals now wonder if they have lost 'ownership' of New Orleans English. Has the linguistics footprint of one of America's most historically rich and diverse cities changed forever?"

The above picture is of one of the New Orleans residents who was interviewed for the episode.
